Responsible for fire safety at a school in Ohio?
Ohio SB112, also known as the Ohio Childhood Safety Act, mandates that schools inspect door assemblies to ensure compliance with NFPA 101 safety standards. Schools must conduct annual inspections by qualified professionals to enhance the security of students and staff. The bill passed on October 24, 2024.
Understanding Fire Door Inspections & Ohio Senate Bill 112: What Schools Need to Know
Keeping Students Safe with the Childhood Safety Act
Ohio Senate Bill 112, also known as the Childhood Safety Act, is now in effect — and if you’re responsible for a K–12 school building in Ohio, this legislation directly impacts your fire safety compliance responsibilities.
At Acme Lock & Door, we know these new rules can feel overwhelming. Here’s what you need to know — and how we can help.
What Does Senate Bill 112 Require?
Ohio Senate Bill 112 mandates that all protective door assemblies in K–12 schools be inspected and tested every 12 months. This is part of aligning with NFPA 101 Life Safety Code standards — a national benchmark for building safety.
What Is a “Protective Door Assembly”?
Protective door assemblies aren’t just fire doors — they include many of the doors critical to emergency exit and student safety. These may include:
-
Doors with panic hardware or fire exit hardware
-
Doors in stairwells or exit enclosures
-
Electrically controlled egress doors
-
Delayed egress doors
-
Sensor-release egress doors
-
Elevator lobby doors
If your school has any of these — and it almost certainly does — they need to be inspected yearly.
Who Can Perform the Inspection?
Only a Qualified Inspector is allowed to conduct these fire door inspections. That means someone trained and certified to verify that each door complies with the appropriate NFPA 101 standard based on when it was installed.
Why It Matters
Fire and egress doors are often your first line of defense in an emergency. If they’re blocked, broken, or non-compliant, it can put lives at risk — and put your school at legal and financial risk, too.
Senate Bill 112 aims to keep our kids safe, and Acme Lock & Door is here to help make that easy and stress-free.
