There are both positives and negatives to home safes and safety deposit boxes. Taking the pros and cons into account, you should decide which works best for your family based on your needs.

Benefits and Downsides of Safety Deposit Boxes

A safety deposit at the bank can be beneficial because of the fact that they're fireproof, waterproof, and not located in the home where they are vulnerable to thieves or natural disasters. They're also under tight security on a consistent basis and the contents are legally protected in the event of the owner's death.

However, safety deposit boxes aren't always ideal for a number of reasons. For one, banks aren't open 24/7, which limits access. It's also easier to lose a key to a safety deposit box, and the bank is probably located in the same part of the country you are where a natural disaster may strike—even if it may offer more protection than your home. There is also an annual fee and, because the contents are legally protected in the event of death, the owner's estate has to close before the executor of your estate can actually access the contents.

Pros and Cons of Home Safes

Home safes are great for several reasons, including the fact that they're always locked, easily accessible 24/7, when mounted to the floor a thief can't run with them, and they're also a one-time expense.

On the other hand, in-home safes can have disadvantages such as a low fire rating that can't sufficiently protect contents in the event of a fire. Home safes are normally only water resistant rather than waterproof, which means that putting out a fire can often damage contents. Contents are also not legally protected following the owner's death, and if a natural disaster destroys the home, the safe is likely to experience heavy damage.

Consider Which is Better for You

While some may prefer keeping valuables stored in a safety deposit box, others may prefer the privacy and accessibility of a home safe. Some may want to store contents in both.
